Profile

U.P. Co-operative sugar factories Federation as an apex body of U.P. was established in 1963 for development and expansion of co-operative sugar industries in U.P. Sugar federation since its inception has been playing active role in establishment of new sugar factories, expansion and modernisation of existing sugar factories, establishment of distilleries for use of byproducts and giving financial, technical and administrative advices and guidelines.

  Development of Co-operative Sugar factories

The First co-operative sugar factory was installed in year 1957 in district Nainital ( currently in Distt. Udham Singh Nagar). It was inaugurated by India's first Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru on 16th Feb,1959. Its successful operation brought a new enthusiasm in U.P. and consequently other new co-operative sugar mills were installed.

During 1959 to 1971, there were only five co-operative sugar factories in U.P. Five more mills were setup during 5th five year plan. 'Dhuriapar' is the lastest unit which was installed in 1996-97. Currently there are 28 units in U.P. in which 6 in western zone, 14 in central zone and rest 8 in eastern zone. Thus a total 27 sugar factories are functional in U.P in co-operative sector with total crushing capacity of 66625 TCD.

Capacity Expansion

In the initial stage most of the co-operative sugar mills were established with the crushing capacity of 1250 Ton per day. Due to inflation, the production cost kept on increasing and the financial position of sugar mills was badly effected in terms of sales realization. Thus 1250 TCD plant become unviable and it was required to expand the crushing capacity upto 2500 Ton per day on the basis of cane availability. Sugar Federation successfully expanded the crushing capacity of 21 sugar mills from 1250 TCD to 2500 TCD between 1988-89 to 1997-98 in a well planned manner. During Crushing season 1999-2000, 3 sugar mills Belrayan, Sampurna Nagar and Nanauta mills were expanded from 2500 TCD to 5000 TCD.

Modernization

Sugar Federation is conscious about quality of sugar and alcohol for export in international market.
Plants and equipments of latest technology have been installed in almost all the mills. Some highlights are as follows:

Sneh Road sugar mill was the first mill to adopt the technique known as " Fasletion technique" for production of export quality sugar.
" Continuous Fermentation" plant was established for quick production of Alcohol in
Sampurna Nagar Distillery .
" Extra Natural " plant was setup to increase the quality of Alcohol in distilleries.

Development of Distilleries

  Molasses
. . . is the main byproduct of sugar industries which is normally 4.5% of total cane crushed. It is raw material for Industrial Alcohol. There are 7 distilleries (Majhola, Anoop Shahar, Kaimganj, Nanauta, Ghosi, Sampurna Nagar, Bajpur(now in Uttarnchal) ) installed in the federation for using this main byproduct. Total capacity of these distilleries is 210 Lacs bulk liter per day.

  Bagasse
. . . is the the 2nd major byproduct which is used as fuel in boilers. The remaining bagasses is being sold to the manufacturers of particle board, paper and news papers.

All these distilleries are producing Industrial Alcohol out of which one distillery i.e. Majhola in district Pilibhit is producing country liquor and foreign liquor also. Which has become very Popular.

National Award

a)
Main emphasis has been given on Technical and Managerial efficiency in operation of co-operative sugar factories.
Belrayan, Bisalpur and Nanauta have received National productivity awards.
b)
Sampurna Nagar, Nanparam Snehroad, Anoopshahar, Nadehi (currently in Uttaranchal) , Nanauta and Rama mills were given techincal efficiency award by National Federation out of which Nadehi, Anoopshahar and Snehroad have been awarded twice.

Environmental Concern

Separate pollution control equipments are established in co-operative sugar factories and distilleries according to their crushing capacity. Equipments are setup in distilleries to convert the effluents into fuel for boilers. Fly ash oesters are installed in sugar mills in order to check air pollution due to Chimany Smoke. In mill campus, extensive plantation is carried out to preserve ecological balance. Sugar Federation is very much conscious of its enviromental responsibilities.

Future Objective

Sugar federation has plan for efficient functioning of sugar mills and distilleries, financial stability and quality control of its products. Emphasis is on maintaining financial discipline, financial control and effective management. Modernisation of sugar mills is being done to improve the quality of products. Besides there is an effective plan for improvement of financial health of sick sugar mills. All this endeavour has however, kept the interest of the cane growers as one of the prime concerns.
